The Routledge Handbook of Youth Physical Activity

author: Mikel Bringas,

The Mugiment project aims to create an active society, and for the fulfillment of this goal the work carried out in childhood and youth is very important. As we previously published, in order to know the reality of physical activity in childhood and youth we are going to participate in the Global Matrix, and also using accelerometers the level of physical activity will be measured.

To expand my knowledge regarding physical activity in childhood and youth I have read the book The Routledge Handbook of Youth Physical Activity. It has not been easy for me; it is an extensive book written in English, but the effort has been productive.

These are the positive aspects that have caught my attention the most:

  • Great collaborative work: 112 authors have created the content.
  • Extensive work: 794 pages distributed in very well organized chapters.
  • Although most of the book is text, it includes 55 tables and 60 very useful images to better understand the content.
  • Practical orientation: It offers many recommendations for practitioners and  researchers, and exposes the problems and limitations existing in each topic.
  • Very extensive and updated bibliography.

However, there are a couple of details that I have not found so positive. First of all, the book is presented as follows: “The Routledge Handbook of Youth Physical Activity is key reading for all advanced students, researchers, practitioners, and policy-makers with an interest in physical activity, youth sport, public health matters, sport studies, or physical education”. Although it may be interesting for all the profiles mentioned, in my opinion most of the content is written from a research perspective. Secondly, in some chapters there are contents that are repeated (for example, the benefits of physical activity), but I imagine that coordinating 112 authors is not easy.

To give you an idea of the type of images and tables it includes, I'm going to show you a couple of examples.

Finally, I will present the list of topics included in the book. From now on, if I have any questions regarding the subject, I already know where to find information, because this book is like one of those multi-tools.
